At this time, individual expression and personality were reflected through fashion and style. From the woman who preferred a more natural makeup, to the one who opted for a more striking one with dark eyeshadow and well-defined eyebrows.
And since popular trends from years ago always end up coming back in one way or another to merge with current ones, in this article of our blog we wanted to make a complete review of the history, give you some tips and tell you what the characteristics of 60s makeup were. Take note!
History of 60s makeup
The makeup of women in the early 60s focused on elegant eyes, lots of face powder, natural lips, and pale pink colors. However, right in the middle of the decade, this style evolved into a simpler and more feminine one, of which the best examples are the model Twiggy and the model Jean Shrimpton.
The explosion of London fashion brought this style and the revolution of hairstyles and makeup. Since the 50s, London led with its “modernist look” or “mod look” and in the 60s stores began to adapt to the trends set by the tastes of the younger generation. The mod style was just one of the three styles that dominated the 60s, along with the classic and hippy. However, mod is the most remembered of the era.
The “cat eye,” which was so common in the 50s, is replaced by false eyelashes. Also, the 60s were the first retro era where women's makeup and wardrobe from the 20s were revived, but adapted to the style of the decade.
Characteristics of 60s makeup
Face
Women in the 60s used a lot of face powder at the beginning of the decade, but later only applied enough to cover imperfections. Around 1963, coral, pink, or peach blush began to be used to create a natural glow all over the face.
Eyebrows
Eyebrows in the 60s were characterized by being clean, groomed, with shape and well defined using an eyebrow pencil.
Eyes
The eyes were the focus of 60s makeup, as false eyelashes, lots of mascara, and eye liner or eyeliner were used. The most popular eyeshadow colors were shades of blue, green, gray, and white. It is worth noting that many women also used false eyelashes on the lower lash line or painted them with eyeliner, just like the model Twiggy.
The distinctive eye makeup of the era is achieved with a pale upper eyelid that carries a dark, unblended line right on the crease, from the inner corner to the outer point of the eyelid. White eyeliner was also applied on the inner eye line to make the eye appear bigger and more open.
Lips
Since the eyes were the most prominent feature of 60s makeup, lips were painted very naturally, with light shades of coral, pink, and peach, and were also lined.
