How to tell if a perfume is original: 8 foolproof tricks

Alberto González
Cómo saber si un perfume es original

The counterfeit perfume market moves millions every year. Fraud has become so sophisticated that even experienced buyers can be fooled. Learning to identify an original perfume before you buy protects both your wallet and your health.

Why it matters to recognise an original perfume

Buying a fake perfume isn't just a money problem. Counterfeit products are made outside regulated channels, without the quality controls or safety restrictions required by the official cosmetics industry. They may contain methanol, benzene, allergens in dangerous concentrations, or simply smell bad after half an hour and leave your skin irritated.

How to tell if a perfume is original: key signs

1. Buy through official channels

The safest way to guarantee authenticity is to buy from authorised perfumeries, official brand stores or verified platforms. If a perfume costs far less on an external marketplace than through official channels, that's a warning sign: brands rarely apply big discounts to their fragrances, let alone through unauthorised channels.

2. Examine the packaging closely

Original perfumes have boxes printed to a very high standard. Look at:

  • How sharp the text and logos are
  • How consistent the colour is (no strange gradients or smudges)
  • The texture of the cardboard (originals use premium materials)
  • How the box closes (it should fit perfectly, with no gaps)

Packaging with blurry lettering, dull colours or visible seams is an immediate warning sign.

3. Check the bottle

Original bottles are made from high-quality glass. Look at:

  • The weight of the bottle (originals are usually heavier)
  • The clarity of the glass (no bubbles or visible flaws)
  • How precise the sprayer is (it should spray evenly without leaking)
  • The engraving or screen-printing of the logo on the glass

4. Check batch numbers and barcodes

Every original perfume has a batch code engraved on the bottom of the bottle and printed on the box. Both must match. There are online batch-code checkers that match the number against the manufacturer's information to confirm the production date and destination market.

5. Assess how long the scent lasts

Original perfumes have a characteristic longevity depending on their concentration (EDC, EDT, EDP, Parfum). If a perfume fades in less than an hour, something isn't right. If it lasts unusually long, that may point to a higher content of lower-quality oils or solvents, typical of counterfeits.

6. Look at the colour of the liquid

Original perfume usually has a uniform, stable colour. Unusual colouring, cloudiness or a different shade from earlier versions of the same product may indicate that the formula isn't the original.

7. Smell it at rest

Fake perfumes often smell good in the top notes, but it's the heart and base that give them away. The base notes of originals are complex and evolve with body heat. A fragrance that smells flat or changes abruptly may be a sign that the formula isn't authentic.

8. A price that's too low is a red flag

A luxury perfume sold for far less than it usually costs in reputable perfumeries is almost certainly not original. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
