Tryptophan: the amino acid that makes serotonin

divain
Triptófano serotonina — divain ZEN

Serotonin is commonly called the wellbeing messenger. It regulates mood, appetite and sleep. And to make it, the body needs a starting material it cannot produce on its own: L-tryptophan.

What is tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid, meaning the human body cannot synthesise it. It must be obtained from the diet — it is found in foods such as turkey, eggs, cheese, nuts and legumes — or through supplementation.

It is the direct precursor of serotonin and, through it, of melatonin. Without enough tryptophan, the chain does not work properly.

The tryptophan → serotonin → melatonin chain

The process is linear: tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP, which is converted into serotonin, which at nightfall is converted into melatonin. This chain explains why a tryptophan deficit can affect both daytime mood and night-time sleep quality.

Magnesium and B vitamins — especially B6 — are cofactors in this conversion: without them, tryptophan does not efficiently transform into serotonin. That is why they are combined in divain ZEN ADAPT.

Tryptophan and stress

Chronic stress can reduce the availability of tryptophan in the brain. When the body is in alert mode, some of the tryptophan is diverted to another metabolic pathway (the kynurenine pathway) and does not reach serotonin. This partly explains why periods of high stress tend to go hand in hand with lower mood and poorer sleep.

What supplementation offers

Supplementing with tryptophan helps ensure the body has the material it needs to maintain serotonin levels, especially during periods of high demand. It is not an antidepressant and does not act within hours — it is a nutrient that supports the natural biochemistry of mood and sleep.

In ADAPT it is paired with ashwagandha, magnesium and B vitamins precisely to cover the full chain: tryptophan provides the raw material, magnesium and the B vitamins provide the tools to convert it, and ashwagandha lowers the cortisol that interferes with the process.

Who it is for and who it is not for

It is suitable for adults with sustained stress, low mood or irregular sleep. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in people under 18, or in combination with antidepressants (especially SSRIs or MAOIs) without medical supervision.
