The tan that lasts: how to keep it as summer starts to fade

August is coming to an end. So is your tan, if you don't take care of it.

It doesn't have to be. The tone that took weeks of sun, beach, and pool to build can last weeks longer with the right care. The difference between skin that keeps that golden hue well into September and skin that fades within two weeks isn't the sun — it's what you do afterward.

Why tans fade

Skin renews itself constantly.

Surface cells — the ones that hold the melanin giving your skin its tanned tone — naturally shed every three to four weeks. It's an ongoing process that can't be stopped, but it can be slowed down.

Anything that speeds up cell renewal also speeds up the loss of your tan. Lack of hydration dries out the skin and causes dead cells to shed sooner. Aggressive exfoliation strips away the layers that hold the most melanin all at once. Chlorine and sea salt, without proper after-sun care, accelerate the process.

Caring for your tan essentially means caring for your skin so it renews its cells as slowly as possible.

Hydration, your first ally

Well-hydrated skin holds onto its tan far longer than dry skin.

The reason is simple: hydrated skin is more elastic, more resilient, and renews its cells in a more orderly and slower way. Dry skin flakes, cracks, and loses its tone unevenly — the lighter patches that appear on elbows, knees, and décolletage as a tan fades are a sign of dehydration.

A body lotion applied daily after showering — while the skin is still damp — is the simplest and most effective way to extend a tan. In areas prone to dryness — shins, knees, elbows — extra hydration with oil or butter makes a visible difference.

Protect to prolong

Late-summer sun is still sun.

Even as temperatures drop and the sun feels less intense, UV radiation remains present in August and September. Going out without sun protection during these months doesn't just damage the skin — it can also cause spots and uneven fading that ruin the tan you built all summer.

Sunscreen helps protect your tan and your skin at the same time.

The tan that stays

With the right care, a summer tan can last well into autumn.

Daily hydration and sun protection. These are the habits that make the difference between a tan that lasts and one that fades within two weeks.

Summer is ending. Your tan doesn't have to.
