Gourmand perfumes: what they are, their notes and why they're trending

divain Parfums
Perfumes gourmand de notas dulces y golosas

Gourmand perfumes are the ones that smell like something you'd want to taste: vanilla, caramel, freshly roasted cocoa, honey or almond. It's a family people either adore or avoid, and today it sits right at the heart of perfumery.

In this guide we explain what a gourmand really is, where it comes from, which types and notes exist, how to wear one without it becoming cloying, and which divain perfumes have that indulgent character.

What is a gourmand perfume?

A gourmand perfume is a fragrance built around notes that evoke sweet or spiced foods. It isn't about copying the kitchen literally, but about translating edible sensations into the language of scent. The usual materials are vanilla, caramel, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, honey, nuts, almond, coffee, toffee and sweet spices such as cinnamon or cardamom. The result is warm, enveloping and almost tactile.

A little history

Sweet notes have always had a place in perfumery, especially vanilla in the great orientals. But the gourmand family as such was born in the early nineties, when chocolate, caramel and candyfloss started to take centre stage. It was a real revolution: it broke with classic conventions and offered a new way of smelling good. It has kept growing ever since.

Why are they so popular?

Because they speak to our emotional side. Smelling of vanilla, warm cocoa or freshly baked cake brings back happy memories and gives an instant feeling of comfort. On top of that, their base notes are dense and long-lasting, so they tend to stay on the skin for more hours than other families.

Types of gourmand perfumes

  • Classic sweet gourmand: vanilla, caramel and sugar. Warm, silky and very long-lasting.
  • Spicy gourmand: cinnamon, cardamom or pink pepper alongside the sweet notes, for added complexity.
  • Fruity gourmand: baked fruit, red berries or citrus over a sweet base. Lighter without losing the indulgent side.
  • Salty gourmand: the newest trend, with hints of salt, butter or popcorn that contrast with the sweetness.

The most popular gourmand notes

  • Vanilla: the gourmand note par excellence; creamy and versatile.
  • Caramel and toffee: toasted sweetness, slightly smoky.
  • Cocoa and chocolate: earthy and sensual, they add a darker dimension.
  • Honey: more complex than sugar, with waxy, balsamic nuances.
  • Almond and tonka bean: soft, toasty and enveloping.
  • Coffee: bitter and roasted, it balances the sweetness and feels modern.

You'll find many more options in our gourmand perfume collection. And if you'd rather go straight to a shortlist, we've put together two selections: one of sophisticated gourmands that aren't too sweet, for anyone who wants sweetness with elegance, and another of sweet perfumes for women and men that last all day. If you love the sugary side, also have a look at our perfumes that smell like candyfloss.

Gourmand for women and for men

In feminine perfumes, gourmands often pair vanilla with white flowers, caramel with red berries or cocoa with patchouli: seductive without feeling heavy. In masculine ones they come with less sugar and more character: sweet tobacco, leather with cocoa, wood with toasted caramel or spices over vanilla. And many of the best are unisex.

Which season are they for?

Their natural territory is autumn and winter: the cold enhances their warmth and trail. Fruity or moderately intense gourmands also work in spring or on summer evenings if applied sparingly.

How to wear a gourmand without it becoming cloying

  • Less is more: one or two sprays on the wrists or neck are enough.
  • Don't apply it to more than three pulse points at once.
  • If you layer it with another perfume, choose a woody or spicy one that anchors the sweetness rather than doubling it.
