Tulsi (holy basil): the Ayurvedic adaptogen for modern stress

divain
Tulsi albahaca sagrada — divain ZEN

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), known in the West as holy basil, has been a central plant in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name means "the incomparable" — a hint at the esteem in which it is held in its culture of origin. Today it is one of the adaptogens receiving the most attention in Western research.

Tulsi as an adaptogen

Tulsi acts on multiple systems simultaneously — the HPA axis (stress), the immune system, glucose metabolism and thyroid function. This multi-system action is characteristic of the best adaptogens. Unlike caffeine or stimulants, tulsi does not activate the nervous system: it balances it.

What tulsi is used for

  • Stress and anxiety: reduces cortisol and anxiety in clinical studies. Particularly studied for chronic work-related stress
  • Cognitive function: improves working memory and reaction time. Some studies compare it favourably with ashwagandha for this purpose
  • Anti-inflammatory: the eugenols and ursolic acid found in tulsi have potent anti-inflammatory activity comparable to some NSAIDs
  • Blood sugar control: several studies show a reduction in fasting blood glucose in people with prediabetes
  • Antimicrobial: traditional use against respiratory infections with supporting in vitro evidence

Tulsi vs ashwagandha: which to choose?

Both are adaptogens, but with different profiles. Ashwagandha has more evidence for severe stress and muscle recovery. Tulsi shines in everyday cognitive stress and has a gentler profile, ideal for long-term use. They complement each other well in the same formula.

How to take tulsi

As a standardised extract, typical doses are 300–600 mg. As an infusion it is very popular in India (the "sacred tea"). For effects on stress and cognition, the standardised extract offers more consistency than the infusion.
