What is the Curly Girl Method
The Curly Girl Method, also known as CGM by its English acronym, is a special hair care routine based on using a series of beauty products of natural origin, specifically designed to care for curly hair and maintain defined and well-hydrated curls.
This method originates from the book "Curly Girl: The Handbook", written by the famous stylist Lorraine Massey, where, in addition to new techniques and beauty tricks, it highlights the importance of using non-aggressive products for hair care.
Specifically, the author emphasizes avoiding the use of curl products that contain silicones, sulfates, mineral oils, waxes, drying alcohols, etc. She also does not recommend the use of devices that emit heat such as hair dryers or straighteners.
What does this hair care routine consist of?
- The first step of this hair care routine is to properly wash the hair to remove harmful compounds that accumulate in it, such as silicones. This stage is known as "Final Wash" and the success of the rest of the hair treatment will depend on it. To perform an effective Final Wash, it is necessary to use a sulfate shampoo free of silicones. It is recommended to repeat this step 2-3 times.
- The sulfate shampoo is only used in the Final Wash stage of the treatment. From here on, you should wash your hair with products that do not contain sulfates. This way, a deep and healthier cleansing will be performed.
- After washing the hair, you should apply a mask or conditioner to the ends to avoid the characteristic knots of any curly hair. It is recommended to use your hands to help apply this product, although you can also use a wide-tooth comb. Once you have applied the mask or conditioner by massaging your hair, you should leave it on for approximately 10-15 minutes. At this point, we recommend covering your head with a shower cap or a plastic bag to increase heat and achieve better results. After the time has passed, rinse the hair well, preferably with cold or lukewarm water.
- The next step of this method is to use special products on wet curly hair. First, apply a leave-in product such as a cream to prevent frizz and then a styling product to maintain definition. Distribute them evenly in your hair and shape your curls with the "scrunching" technique.
- Once you have applied these products, wait for your hair to air dry or use a hair dryer with a diffuser on cool air.
- At night, tie your hair up on your head when you go to sleep or use a night cap. The main goal of this is to reduce frizz.
- During the day, constantly hydrate your hair with a little water, either using your hands or a spray bottle. It is recommended to use mineral-free water.
- Finally, apply a hair mask at least once a week, leaving it on for 20-30 minutes. This way, you will add shine and softness to your curls.
