Nothing lasts forever. And sadly, Fragrances don't either. Because yes, even if you've never questioned it, Fragrances have an expiration date. Since we know this is a rather unknown issue, today we are going to delve a little deeper into the topic and give you a series of tips to extend their shelf life.
WHY DO FRAGRANCES EXPIRE?
Although a Quality Fragrance can last for years (normally it remains intact for one to three years) it is not a product that remains completely unchanged over time since its components are affected by the weather conditions to which it is exposed. So yes, Fragrances expire.
Thus, the temperature change, light, humidity, and excess oxygenation, they can cause it to oxidize and even reach evaporate; besides its scent losing its initial intensity. Heat and light are the two factors that affect them the most.
HOW TO KNOW IF A FRAGRANCE HAS EXPIRED?
How to know if a Fragrance has expired it is something quite easy to find out.
One of the simplest and most intuitive ways to find out is observe its color. If it has turned much darker and acquires a tone similar to rum, it is likely that it has oxidized and, therefore, expired.
If you can't clearly see its color because its tone was already dark or because the bottle is opaque, don't worry, your sense of smell is your best ally to discover it. And it's that Fragrances that have expired are very easy to identify, since the fragrance loses its scent, it feels much less intense and can even smell like alcohol; which means that a large part of its composition has evaporated.
TIPS TO MAKE FRAGRANCES LAST LONGER
If you are a Fragrance fanatic (like us) and have a lot of them on your dresser, don't worry, because here are a series of foolproof tips to make your favorite Fragrance last much longer.
Although Fragrances expire, if you keep them under these conditions, they can last you years in perfect condition.
KEEP THEM AWAY FROM LIGHT
One of the factors that most damage Fragrances is direct sunlight, since this can break down some molecules of their components, thus accelerating their oxidation. Therefore, the ideal is store them in their original container, in a drawer or in a cabinet. And if you don't have space in any of them, make sure it is a nook where light does not hit.
COOL AND DRY PLACE
Temperature changes and humidity are not good for Fragrances. Therefore, the the bathroom is not a suitable place to store them.
Also avoid very warm places, as heat alters the formula and some essences evaporate.
TAKE THEIR COMPOSITION INTO ACCOUNT
If you are one of those who has a Fragrance for every occasion and use very little of each one, it is advisable to choose Fragrances whose components last longer.
Not all notes last the same way, for example, Fragrances with citrus notes, those that have a lot of patchouli or those of the olfactory family Chypre are higher and tend to oxidize faster. On the other hand, Fragrances that contain notes of incense or resin last longer.
Also, Fragrances with a high alcohol concentration last longer, while those that have oily or natural bases they expire faster.
AVOID EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT
We know that as a true Fragrance enthusiast, you like to take them everywhere so you can apply them whenever you want. That said, choose a dispenser where you can put a small amount of the Fragrance and keep the original bottle intact and in one place, since sudden or constant movements (like those they can suffer when carried in a purse or briefcase) cause the molecules to agitate and the formulas to be damaged.
We hope this series of tips helps your favorite DIVAIN Fragrances last for years and accompany you in the best moments.
