How to take care of the environment - Small actions that change everything

|Laura González Becker

The Earth is our home and we must take care of it and preserve it so that it continues to be so. This important task cannot be the responsibility of just a few, but we all must collaborate and contribute our grain of sand as much as possible. And we say as much as possible because it is clear that not everyone can perform incredible actions that have an immediate and tremendous impact. But what we can do is commit to carrying out a series of small habits that, little by little, will end up changing the world.

And it is well known, a small gesture doesn't do much, but many small ones become the engine of change and they end up generating a great impact. In DIVAIN we are part of this change and we want to encourage you to join as well, so today we present a series of key points for you to know how to take care of the environment in your daily life.

Recycle

We couldn't start without mentioning the most basic and essential action of all: recycling. And we say it is the most basic and essential because thanks to it we give a second life to the planet's resources, which are limited no, extremely limited!

There are no excuses not to recycle. There are more and more containers in cities and towns, and we can all find a spot at home to put two or three bags to throw different waste. But... are you clear on how to separate them?

  • In the striking yellow container all Fragrance containers must be deposited plastic, the cans, the bricks, and the aluminum foil! This is one of the biggest mistakes, as it is usually thrown in the organic container but it must go in the plastics one. That said, try to make sure it does not contain food residues.
  • The light green container shaped like an igloo, is intended for all types of containers of glass. That is, it is in this one where you must throw the bottles of your DIVAIN once the Fragrance is finished.
  • In the blue container you must deposit the paper and the cardboard packaging (like the box in which we send your DIVAINs to your home and the one that holds the bottle itself).
  • And finally, the dilemma of organic waste. Here we face two scenarios. If in your place of residence you have brown containers we say if you have them because they are relatively new) in them you must deposit all the organic waste that can be used to make compost (leftovers of vegetables and fruits, cooked meat, fish and seafood, pasta and rice, eggshells, coffee and tea grounds, infusion bags, bread, toothpicks, herbs and plants, used napkins and kitchen paper…); and in the traditional green bin, everything else. Otherwise, all organic and inorganic waste must go in the green bin.

Goodbye plastic!

Plastic is biodiversity's number 1 enemy. It is one of the materials that takes the longest to degrade, so it accumulates, harming the environment and the species that live in it.

And we are not exaggerating even a little: a plastic bag takes 150 years to disappear and a bottle made of PET (the most commonly used type of plastic for making containers and textiles) can take up to a thousand years to degrade. This is why it is important to use as little plastic as possible, and if we have to use it, recycle or reuse it. Here are some ideas to help you reduce plastic consumption:

Use reusable bags and utensils

No using single-use plastic cups and plates, nor of course bags (we have already seen how long they take to decompose). Whenever you go shopping, bring a cloth bag or a reusable one. The less demand there is for plastic bags, the fewer will be produced, and therefore less danger to the environment.

Also, in recent years, the countries adhering to the International Environmental Treaties, have established regulations and laws that govern the use of plastic bags and supermarkets are forced to charge their customers for them.

Buy in bulk

This is one of the simplest gestures but the most helpful to preserve environmental sustainability. Bring your own cloth bags to the fruit shop, your containers to the butcher or fishmonger, an egg carton to the poultry shop… This way they won’t have to use their own containers (which are usually plastic).

Don't waste either water or electricity

In general, don't waste, but we emphasize water and electricity because it is the most likely to be wasted. And it is very easy to leave lights or electronic devices on without being in the room or using them, or not turn off the tap when washing dishes or cleaning ourselves. Who hasn't experienced this?

This little oversight impacts the environment more than we think, so, you know. Stop wondering how to take care of the environment and start by turn off the tap and the light.

Use LED or low consumption bulbs

All the bulbs that are manufactured in Spain since 2012 are low consumption. And it is that they are not only more environmentally friendly because of the energy saving which results from their use, but also last much longer and the quality and intensity of the light is much greater.

There are three types: the LED, the halogen and the fluorescent; although the first ones are the most durable and consume far less electricity. Although they are a bit more expensive than conventional bulbs, it is worth buying them because besides helping the environment, you will be helping your wallet, you will see how the electricity bill amount decreases!

Avoid the car

Walking is healthy for the body, mind, and the environment! The less we use the car, less carbon footprint (greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere) we will be generating, so pollution will be lower and we will contribute to environmental protection.

We have to say goodbye forever to pollution blankets that plague big cities, not only to preserve the ecosystem but also for the health of our lungs. If you can't walk, always try to take public transport or carpool.

Delete unnecessary emails from the inbox

How? What does this have to do with it? A lot! As surprising as it may seem, emails consume CO2 since shipping and storage require energy to power data centers and the devices that process them.

Let paper pass away

And last but not least, say goodbye to paper or at least try to use or make the most of it: print only when necessary and on both sides, reuse old invoices as scratch paper and replace paper napkins with cloth ones.

These gestures, no matter how simple and small, have great power to change the world and make it a much better place. Do like us and join the environmental protection movement #PlanetFirst!
