Tips to save water at home

How to save water in the bathroom

The bathroom is the area of the house where the most water is used. Therefore, it is very important that you know how to act and optimize all the resources at your disposal to save as much water as possible. Here are some tips:

  • Showering instead of bathing: replace the bath with a shower and you will be able to save more than 50% of the water. To give you an idea, a bath uses approximately 200 liters of water, while showering uses less than 50 liters. Similarly, keep the faucet closed when you are soaping or washing your hair. Keep in mind that each minute with the faucet open uses about 12 liters of water.
  • Turn off the faucet: when you are brushing your teeth, shaving, or soaping your hands, keep the faucet closed to nor waste water. For example, if you brush your teeth without turning off the faucet, you will use an average of 6 liters of water, but if you only turn it on when necessary, the consumption will be only half a liter.
  • Install a water diffuser or reducer on the shower and sink faucets to reduce the flow.
  • Bathtub reducers: if you have small children, we recommend that you buy a bathtub reducer to avoid having to fill it completely.
  • Do not use the toilet as a trash can: do not throw cigarette butts, band-aids, non-disposable wipes, or trash down the toilet because, besides saving water by reducing the number of times you flush, you will also prevent clogs. Likewise, this type of waste is harmful for the environment and pose a danger to the ecosystem.
  • Fix leaks: although this also applies to other areas of the house such as the garden or kitchen, it is important that you fix water leaks in faucets, hoses, showers… Not doing so can result in an expense of up to 100 liters per day.
  • Tricks in your cistern to save water: install a button that allows two types of water flushes depending on the needs. If this is not possible, you can add a bag of stones or sand inside your cistern's load. You will save up to 50% of water.

Recommendations to save water in the kitchen

If you want to learn how to use kitchen water more efficiently, check out these recommendations:

  • Do not rinse the dishes: it is not necessary to rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Some experts say this can be even counterproductive, since soap needs dirt to work better. Also, the dishwasher operates at sufficiently high temperatures to disinfect everything properly.
  • Load appliances to 100%: make sure that appliances like the washing machine or dishwasher are at 100% of their load capacity before running them. Besides saving water at home, you will also reduce electricity consumption.
  • Efficient appliances: Whenever you can and when you are going to replace appliances, choose those that are low consumption or have built-in water-saving programs.
  • Turn off the tap: Just like in the bathroom, keep the tap closed while you are, for example, cleaning or soaping the dishes. This can lead to considerable water savings.
  • Washing and thawing food: instead of washing fruit or vegetables under running tap water, do it in a water container. Similarly, to defrost food do not do it under the tap, but at room temperature or inside the fridge. Speaking of food, here are some tricks to save on shopping which you are surely eager to know.

How to save water in the garden and pool

Finally, if your house has a garden or you have a private pool, take a look at these measures to save water.

  • Broom instead of hose: to clean the floor or collect dry leaves, avoid using the hose and always prioritize the broom.
  • Watering cans and sprinklers: to water pots or small areas, do it by hand with watering cans and sprayers. If you need to use sprinklers, program them efficiently and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Water at night or early in the morning: we recommend watering your plants and lawn at night or early in the morning because during the hottest hours, due to the temperatures, the water evaporates much faster.
  • Tips for your pool: To prevent the water from getting dirty or evaporating during periods when it is not used, cover the pool with a tarp to avoid having to refill it when the heat starts.

These are some recommendations to save water at home that will undoubtedly improve the consumption of this natural resource. Now it's your turn to put them into practice—for your future and for the environment!
