How to do a Korean facial routine

|Laura González Becker

Korean style is in fashion. You could already see it in our article about the Korean makeup, and today we reiterate it again. But this time, focusing on the realm of skin care. The Korean facial routine is grabbing all the attention in the Western world, and it's no wonder, because the results are incredible.

Let's see the steps you need to follow if you want to have skin worthy of a porcelain doll.

The 10 steps of the Korean facial routine

You might hesitate with the headline, because we know that having to do so many actions in your daily facial routine… is a drag. But don’t worry, because you don’t have to do them all every day, just choose which steps are essential for your skin and do those daily. The rest you’ll do occasionally.

Let's go! These are the 10 steps of the Korean facial routine:

STEP 1. Double facial cleansing: oil-based cleanser

These first two steps are the most essential of all. The ones that that truly make a difference. The ones you have to do every day no matter what.

And in Korea, they don’t use two-phase cleansers or micellar waters; instead, they clean their face with two products. First, they use an oil-based cleanser, to remove makeup and the grease and dirt accumulated throughout the day.

STEP 2. Double facial cleansing: water-based cleanser

Once they have removed the first layer of dirt with the oil-based cleanser, they proceed to apply another cleanser, but this time water-based. This one finishes removing any remaining dirt. The result? Impossibly clean skin.

STEP 3. Exfoliation

You should not do this step every day because... you could lose your face! Jokes aside, the exfoliation is very necessary since it is responsible for removing the dead cells of the skin and promotes cell renewal, making the skin absorb the products and nutrients we apply better. But you should do it depending on your skin type.

If you have dry skin, we recommend that you exfoliate it once a week; while if you have oily and acne-free you can do it from once to twice a week. On the other hand, if you have very thin or sensitive, do it every fifteen days if you don't want your skin to get irritated and suffer.

STEP 4. Apply toner

The facial toner is another step you can't skip. And it is the product that balances the pH of the skin after cleansing or exfoliation. Let's say it is responsible for pampering our skin.

After applying it, you will feel your skin hydrated, protected, and even cleaner. Thanks to it, our skin will be ready for the next steps of the Korean facial care routine.

STEP 5. The essence

The essence is completely unknown in the Western beauty world. It is a a mix between a toner and a serum, since it is much more concentrated than the toner but lighter than the serum. It is applied right between these two products to provide extra hydration.

It is enriched with numerous beneficial skin actives, with high doses of ferments like yeast; that promote flexibility and elasticity. Also, it works at the cellular level, so the results are much deeper and can be noticed faster.

Experts say this is a decisive step. So don't even think about skipping it!

STEP 6. The serum

There is nothing like a good serum to make your skin look irresistible. These products have such a high concentration of beneficial active ingredients for the skin that their application is another step you cannot skip.

There are a thousand types, so we recommend you take your time to identify what you want to improve in your skin, and choose the serum according to to it. There are some to treat spots, to delay the appearance of wrinkles and signs of aging, to prevent acne, to treat dehydration or give more radiance… Although you can also vary and use different serums throughout the year to address more skin concerns.

STEP 7. The sheet mask

You don't have to do this step every day but you'll want to because it's so much fun. Although the name may sound a bit strange, you have surely seen them before. They are the thin white masks with holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth. The ones that make you look like the Phantom of the Opera!

They are the queens of deep hydration, since thanks to their shape, they fully adapt to the skin, reaching even the hardest-to-access crevices like the lower part of the nostrils. Also, since they are made of fiber or of cotton, do not allow nutrients to evaporate before being absorbed.

STEP 8. The eye contour

This step is another of the basics of the Korean facial routine. The skin around our eyes is much more thin and delicate than the rest of the face, so it needs a special product to care for it properly.

Apply a small amount only on the orbital bone (never on the eyelid or too close to the waterline), with gentle taps and using the ring finger, since it is the weakest of all. This light massage will activate circulation and will prevent the appearance of bags and wrinkles.

STEP 9. The moisturizing cream

This step cannot be missed either, not only in the Korean facial routine but in any beauty routine worth its salt.

Without moisturizer, the skin will never be fully hydrated. It also takes care of seal all the products that you applied earlier. Essential!

STEP 10. Sun protection

Surely you are not very used to this. But it is another of the strong points of this routine that make Korean women have such perfect and beautiful skin.

Blessed be the sun, as it brings us warmth, joy, and a very beautiful tone to our skin.

But watch out because if we don't protect it well from it, it can cause us irreversible damage. The appearance of spots is a clear example of this, so sunscreen must be the last step of your daily facial routine. Apply it before going outside, no matter the day; because, even if it's cloudy, the UV rays always leak through and affect our skin.

And… c’est fini! This is what the Korean facial care routine consists of. 10 simple steps that will make a before and after on your face.

Even so, if you are still a bit reluctant to it or don't have time, take a look at this facial routine alternative. It's also super effective!
