What is Royal Jelly?

Royal jelly is a substance secreted by the hypopharyngeal glands of the heads of worker bees, between 5 and 10 days old, which, mixed with stomach secretions, is the food for larvae during the first three days of life.

The queen bee and the larvae in royal cells that will become a new queen bee are the only ones that can be fed with this jelly, hence its name. This honey-like substance is viscous, yellow in color, and quite acidic.

Primarily, royal jelly from bees consists of 60% water, but it also contains proteins, lipids, minerals, amino acids, B vitamins such as B1, B2, B5, B6, and B8, and folic acid. This composition makes the properties of royal jelly for human life enormous and a great help against physical and mental wear.

Royal jelly has many benefits for physical and mental health.

  • To begin with, it has regenerative properties that promote cell formation and thus the care of bones, skin, and the nervous system.

  • Royal jelly is also a natural antibiotic thanks to its antiviral and antibacterial properties that protect the body against viruses and bacteria. Its use also promotes the healing of cuts, burns, and other wounds.
  • It is reported that royal jelly is effective against anxiety, insomnia, depression, and nervousness thanks to the content of B group vitamins. In other words, it is a natural anxiolytic.
  • Finally, it can strengthen the immune system. It can improve symptoms of multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s, serve as treatment for episodes of anemia, and also treat nutritional deficiencies, as it can reinforce the diet in both malnourished children and adults with poor appetite.

How to Take Royal Jelly

Royal jelly should not be consumed if you suffer from allergies, asthma, hypertension, tachycardia, migraine, diabetes, obesity, Addison’s disease, dermatitis, or other skin problems. Also, it is recommended to avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In any case, we recommend that you consult your primary care physician before taking it.

To take royal jelly, you should only ingest a small amount of the substance, the size of a grain of rice. If you do not like its taste, you can mix it with other foods such as milk, honey, or juice. It is recommended to take it in the morning or on an empty stomach and let it dissolve on the tongue.

Royal jelly is not dangerous and offers many benefits, but as we have said, you should consult your doctor before starting to take it.
