GABA: the rest neurotransmitter you can also supplement

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. Its function is to reduce neuronal activity: when the brain is overstimulated — by stress, screens or mental noise — GABA puts the brakes on.

What GABA does in the body

GABA binds to specific receptors on neurons and reduces their excitability. This produces:

  • A feeling of calm and mental relaxation
  • Reduction of anxiety
  • Facilitation of sleep
  • Decreased muscle tension

Many drugs work precisely by enhancing the GABAergic system: benzodiazepines, alcohol and barbiturates all work this way. The difference with supplemented GABA is that it does not generate tolerance or dependence.

Does supplemented GABA cross the blood-brain barrier?

This has been the great controversy surrounding oral GABA. Classic studies indicated that molecular GABA does not cross the brain's protective barrier well. More recent studies on fermentation-derived GABA (PharmaGABA) show that it does produce measurable effects on brain waves and stress markers, possibly through the enteric (intestinal) nervous system.

Ingredients such as valerian and passionflower work by boosting the body's own endogenous GABA — an indirect route with solid evidence.

GABA for sleep

Studies show that GABA reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and improves the first phase of sleep. It is used in combination with melatonin because they act through different pathways and complement each other — exactly the logic behind divain ZEN DREAMS.

How to take GABA

The most commonly used doses are between 100 and 300 mg. PharmaGABA (naturally fermented GABA) shows better results than synthetic GABA at equivalent doses. It is preferably taken 30 minutes before sleep or during moments of acute stress.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to feel the effects?

The calming effect can be felt from the very first dose. The effect on sleep improves with continued use over 2–4 weeks.

Is it safe to take daily?

Yes. At supplement doses it does not generate dependence or tolerance. It is one of the best-tolerated ingredients in rest and sleep formulas.
