What is a chypre perfume: origin, notes and how to recognise one

Milagros Oria Prieto

← Complete guide to fragrance families

Chypre perfumes are the most sophisticated, elegant and probably the most misunderstood family in all of perfumery. They are the connoisseurs' favourites, the most awarded in history and the ones that shaped 20th-century perfumery the most. If you want to go beyond florals and orientals, chypres are the next level.

Where the name comes from

The name comes from Cyprus, the Mediterranean island that has been exporting resins, labdanum and aromatic oils since ancient times. French perfumery borrowed its name, Chypre, for an accord that, in the early 20th century, set the structure of the whole family: bergamot in the top, labdanum (a resin) in the heart and oakmoss in the base. That trio is the architectural signature of every chypre.

The key notes

  • Bergamot: the bright, citrusy opening that lights up the whole composition.
  • Labdanum: a dark, warm resin extracted from rockrose. It adds a warm, animalic, earthy touch.
  • Oakmoss: the most characteristic note and also the most controversial. It is green, damp, almost like wet earth. Classic chypres used it generously, but international cosmetic regulations have restricted it because of its allergenic potential. Today's chypres rely on alternatives or use it in tiny doses.
  • Patchouli: earthy and dark, it deepens the chypre's character.
  • Rose or jasmine: in floral chypres, the flowers bring a softer heart.

The challenge of modern chypres

Recreating a classic chypre to the letter today is practically impossible, because cosmetic regulations have reduced oakmoss to a minimum. Many chypres reformulated in recent decades have lost part of their original soul. That is why artisan perfumery has revived the family, working with alternative materials to recapture that earthy, sophisticated spirit.

Who are chypres for?

For anyone looking for complexity, character and a presence that says something. They are not trendy perfumes, they are perfumes with character. A chypre smells like nothing else and can't be mistaken for any other family. Wear one, and people who know about perfume will notice.

If you already know this family is for you, our selection of the best chypre perfumes tells you which ones are worth it and why. And if you'd rather explore on your own, the divain chypre perfume collection has them all, from the greenest to the most floral.
