Spicy perfumes: pepper, cardamom and cinnamon — intense and memorable

Milagros Oria Prieto

← Complete guide to olfactory families

Spicy perfumes are the most intense, the most versatile and, when they are well built, the most memorable. In perfumery, spices are not just "hot": they bring warmth, depth and a complexity that makes spicy fragrances the ones that always get noticed. If you want a perfume with character, spices are your best ally.

Spices in the history of perfumery

Spices have been part of perfumery since its very beginnings. Egyptian incense, Mesopotamian ointments and the aromatic oils of ancient Greece and Rome all contained clove, cinnamon, myrrh and other spices. The Silk Road carried not only silk but also the spices that would shape oriental perfumery for centuries.

The most important spicy notes

  • Black and pink pepper: pepper is one of the most elegant spices in perfumery. Black pepper adds freshness and bite; pink pepper is softer and more floral. Both are perfect in the opening of oriental and woody fragrances.
  • Cardamom: spicy, fresh and slightly citrusy. Cardamom is sophisticated: it brings warmth without sweetness and freshness without coldness. Widely used in niche perfumery.
  • Cinnamon: warm, sweet and enveloping. In large amounts it can dominate; in small doses it adds warmth and sensuality to any composition.
  • Clove: intense, spicy and slightly medicinal. It gives fragrances oriental character and depth.
  • Nutmeg: warm, lightly woody and very comforting. Widely used in orientals and spicy fougères.
  • Ginger: fresh, zesty and invigorating. A modern spice that works well in both fresh and oriental perfumes.
  • Saffron: one of the most exclusive ingredients in perfumery. Its scent is earthy, metallic, slightly animalic and hugely complex. A star of Arabian perfumery and modern Western niche.

How to wear spicy perfumes without overdoing it

Spices are heart and base notes par excellence: they bring warmth and longevity. The trick is not to apply too much, because an intense spicy perfume can feel overwhelming in closed spaces. One or two sprays on the neck or wrists are enough. Cold weather amplifies them: in winter, a spicy scent really comes alive.

Spicy divain perfumes

If you want to move from theory to skin, these four fragrances from our range put spices centre stage:

  • divain.295 (men): opens with cardamom, nutmeg, saffron, mandarin and neroli; the heart blends kulfi, rose, mastic resin, orange blossom and jasmine, and the base leaves vanilla, amber, woods and sandalwood.
  • divain.028 (men): top notes of lavender, mint, cardamom, bergamot and southernwood; a heart of cinnamon, orange blossom and caraway; a base of sandalwood, tonka bean, amber, vanilla and cedar. A classic spicy scent that is very easy to wear.
  • divain.611 (unisex): jasmine and saffron in the opening, amberwood and ambergris in the heart, and a base of fir resin and cedar. For anyone who wants saffron in a clean, luminous style.
  • divain.167 (women): pear, pink pepper and orange blossom up top; a heart of coffee, jasmine, bitter almond and liquorice; a base of vanilla, patchouli, cedar and cashmere wood. Pink pepper at its most gourmand.

If you fancy widening the list for the colder months, here are the best spicy perfumes for autumn. And if you would rather explore on your own, our spicy perfumes collection brings together every fragrance in this family.
