Vetiver in perfumery: earthy, smoky and unique

← Ingredients and raw materials in perfumery

Vetiver is the hardest note in perfumery to describe. It isn't floral, it isn't sweet, it isn't fresh: it's earthy, smoky, almost medicinal, and yet hugely sophisticated. It's a favourite of many perfumers and the note that separates a perfume with character from a generic one.

What is vetiver

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a tropical grass native to India. The essential oil is extracted from its roots by steam distillation, and those roots can reach more than 3 metres deep. It's one of the most laborious extraction processes in the industry.

Vetivers of the world: key differences

  • Haitian vetiver: the most prized in Western perfumery. Soft, lightly smoky, with notes of damp earth and wood. Complex and elegant.
  • Java vetiver (Indonesia): darker, smoky and almost medicinal. Very powerful and intense.
  • Indian vetiver: earthy, herbal and slightly fresh. The most classic and the most "green".
  • Réunion vetiver: clean, almost aquatic. Very different from classic vetiver.

Vetiver in perfumery: uses and contexts

Vetiver mostly appears as a base note, anchoring the composition and adding longevity. But there are also perfumes where it's the absolute lead: some of the most respected woody perfumes ever made are built around it as their single central note. When vetiver leads, the result is a refined, unfussy kind of masculinity.

Is vetiver only for men?

No. Vetiver is unisex by nature, with nothing inherently masculine or feminine about it. The idea that it's "masculine" comes from marketing, not from the note itself. Plenty of niche perfumers, and plenty of women with their own taste, wear vetiver as a personal signature.

How to spot vetiver in a perfume

Look for that earthy base, like wet soil or smoked wood, that lingers for hours after the perfume has developed. If it leaves a warm feel on the skin, almost like soft smoke or burnt wood, it most likely has vetiver in the base.

divain perfumes with vetiver

If you want to feel on your own skin how vetiver changes depending on what surrounds it, these four perfumes have it in the formula:

  • divain-039: a men's woody scent that opens with orange and grapefruit, moves through pelargonium and pepper and settles on cedar, vetiver, patchouli and benzoin. Here vetiver is the backbone of the base.
  • divain-331: lavender on top, a heart of iris, ambrette musk and pear, and a base of Virginia cedar and vetiver. A clean vetiver, powdered by the iris.
  • divain-222: a fougère that opens with Calabrian bergamot and pepper. Vetiver shows up in the heart alongside Sichuan pepper, lavender, pink pepper, patchouli, geranium and elemi, over ambroxan, cedar and labdanum.
  • divain-591: proof that vetiver isn't just for men. Bergamot and pear, a heart of tuberose, orange blossom and sambac jasmine, and a base of patchouli, vetiver, ambroxan and vanilla.

You'll find more options in our collection of vetiver perfumes. And if you're curious about the whole family, our guide to woody perfumes covers the rest of the wood notes.
