Gourmand perfumes: what they are, their notes and why they're trending

Gourmand perfumes smell like something you'd want to taste: vanilla, caramel, freshly roasted cocoa, honey or almond. It's a family that divides opinion and wins hearts in equal measure, and today it sits at the heart of perfumery.

In this guide we explain exactly what a gourmand is, where it comes from, which types and notes exist, how to wear it without it being cloying and which divain perfumes share that delicious character.

What is a gourmand perfume?

A gourmand perfume is a fragrance built around notes that evoke sweet or spiced foods. It isn't about imitating the kitchen literally, but about translating edible sensations into the language of perfume. Common materials include vanilla, caramel, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, honey, nuts, almond, coffee, toffee and sweet spices such as cinnamon or cardamom. The result is warm, enveloping and almost tactile.

A little history

Sweet notes have always been part of perfumery, especially vanilla in the great orientals. But the gourmand family as such was born in the early nineties, when chocolate, caramel and candy floss began to take centre stage. It was a revolution: it broke with classical conventions and offered a new way to smell good. It hasn't stopped growing since.

Why are they so popular?

Because they connect with our emotional side. The scent of vanilla, hot cocoa or freshly baked cake brings back pleasant memories and gives an instant feeling of comfort. Their base notes are also dense and long-lasting, so they tend to stay on the skin longer than other families.

Types of gourmand perfume

  • Classic sweet gourmand: vanilla, caramel and sugar. Warm, silky and very long-lasting.
  • Spicy gourmand: cinnamon, cardamom or pink pepper alongside sweet notes, for added complexity.
  • Fruity gourmand: baked fruit, red berries or citrus over a sweet base. Lighter without losing its indulgent side.
  • Salty gourmand: the latest trend, with hints of salt, butter or popcorn that contrast with the sweetness.

The most popular gourmand notes

  • Vanilla: the gourmand note par excellence; creamy and versatile.
  • Caramel and toffee: toasted sweetness with a slightly smoky edge.
  • Cocoa and chocolate: earthy and sensual, adding a darker dimension.
  • Honey: more complex than sugar, with waxy, balsamic nuances.
  • Almond and tonka bean: soft, toasted and enveloping.
  • Coffee: bitter and roasted, balancing the sweetness and adding modernity.

Gourmands for women and men

In women's perfumery, gourmands often pair vanilla with white flowers, caramel with red berries or cocoa with patchouli: seductive without being heavy. In men's, they come with less sugar and more character: sweet tobacco, leather with cocoa, wood with toasted caramel or spices over vanilla. And many of the best are unisex.

When to wear them

Their natural territory is autumn and winter: the cold boosts their warmth and sillage. Fruity or moderate gourmands also work in spring or on summer evenings if applied sparingly.

How to wear a gourmand without it being cloying

  • Less is more: one or two sprays on the wrists or neck are enough.
  • Don't apply it to more than three pulse points at once.
  • If you layer it with another perfume, choose a woody or spicy one that anchors the sweetness without multiplying it.
