Aromatic and fougère perfumes: lavender, rosemary and fresh herbs

Milagros Oria Prieto

Aromatic fragrances —also called fougère— are the family most associated with classic men's perfumery. Its founding classics all share that herbal, fresh, and slightly powdery DNA that defines fougère. But the family has evolved enormously, and today there are modern aromatics that completely break away from the stereotype.

The original fougère: a formula that defined an era

Fougère means "fern" in French. Paradoxically, ferns have no scent of their own —the name is an evocation, not a description. The classic fougère structure combines lavender at the heart, coumarin (which smells like hay) at the base, and bergamot at the top. This formula, established in 1882 with the first fougère in history, was the foundation of men's perfumery for nearly a century.

The most important aromatic notes

  • Lavender: the iconic note of aromatics. Fresh, herbal, slightly floral. Provençal lavender is the most valued.
  • Coumarin: smells like freshly cut hay, soft vanilla, and almond. It is the note that gives warmth and "powder" to classic fougères.
  • Rosemary: herbal, rustic, and slightly medicinal. Adds a vegetal freshness.
  • Geranium: floral but with a herbaceous and slightly metallic touch. Widely used to give a green character to fougère.
  • Sage: bitter, medicinal, and very aromatic. A protagonist in many modern aromatics.
  • Thyme, basil, wormwood: Mediterranean herbs that provide character and natural freshness.

Modern aromatics: beyond the classic fougère

Contemporary aromatics have gone far beyond lavender-coumarin. Today they include fragrances that blend herbal notes with wood, spices, aquatic notes, or even gourmand, creating much more complex and versatile compositions. The result is a family that can no longer be simply labeled as "masculine" or "classic."

When to wear an aromatic

Aromatics are perfect for everyday wear, for work, and for spring. They are fresh without being aquatic, have character without being heavy, and are incredibly wearable. If you're looking for a fragrance that won't bother anyone but isn't bland, a well-chosen aromatic is the answer.
