← Ingredients and raw materials in perfumery
Cedar is the cleanest, driest and most universally present woody note in perfumery. It lacks the creaminess of sandalwood and the complexity of vetiver: cedar is direct, elegant and modern. That is why it sits in the base of thousands of fragrances, from the lightest fresh scents to the densest orientals.
The cedars of perfumery
- Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica): grown in North Africa. Dry, slightly balsamic, with a powdery, elegant touch. It is the reference cedar in high-end perfumery.
- Virginia cedar (Juniperus virginiana): fresher, almost fruity, with slightly citrusy facets. Widely used in colognes and masculine fougères.
- Himalayan cedar: balsamic, almost resinous. Warmer than the other cedars.
- Iso E Super: not a natural cedar but a synthetic molecule with cedary, incense-like facets. Its most fascinating trait is that many people don't consciously perceive it, yet it acts as an amplifier for the other notes.
Why cedar is so versatile
Cedar doesn't dominate, it accompanies. It gives structure to compositions, extends longevity and brings that sense of elegant cleanliness found in many successful perfumes. It is the “well-cut suit” of perfumery: it doesn't draw attention to itself, but it makes everything else look better.
Cedar in the classics
Some of the most iconic masculine woody fragrances of the 20th century built their identity on cedar and Iso E Super. Most classic masculine fougères use it as an anchor. And in modern niche perfumery, cedar in the lead role has produced minimalist masterpieces with real impact.

- divain-331 (men): opens with lavender, moves to a heart of iris, ambrette musk and pear, and settles on Virginia cedar and vetiver. A clean cedar, softened and powdered by the iris.
- divain-573 (women): Damask rose, jasmine and orange blossom at the top, musk in the heart and a base of vetiver, cedar, coumarin and patchouli. Here cedar holds up the flowers and gives them body.
- divain-034 (men): cardamom at the top; bergamot, Virginia cedar and lavender in the heart; vetiver and caraway in the base. Spicy and aromatic, with cedar at the centre of the composition.
- divain-292 (unisex): Virginia cedar with seaweed, salt and myrtle. Cedar at its freshest and saltiest, for anyone looking for something different from the usual woody scent.
