How to choose your ideal perfume: complete step-by-step guide

Alberto González
Persona oliendo un perfume para elegir la fragancia ideal

Choosing a perfume seems easy until you are standing in front of a wall of bottles and, after five paper strips, you can no longer tell one from another. The good news is that getting it right is not down to luck: there is a method. In this guide we walk you through it step by step, from scent families to the right way to test a fragrance, so next time you choose with confidence rather than on impulse.

Step 1: think about when and where you will wear it

Before smelling anything, ask yourself one question: what do you want it for? A perfume for the office every morning is not the same as one for dinners and weekend plans. If you want an everyday perfume, look for something versatile with moderate projection. If it is for specific occasions, you can go for more intensity and a stronger trail. Being clear about this cuts your options in half before you even start.

Step 2: identify your scent family

Scent families group perfumes by their dominant notes, and they are the most useful filter there is. If you already know you are drawn to fresh scents or, on the contrary, to warm and enveloping ones, you have done half the work. To dig deeper into how we perceive smells, read our guide to types of scents and fragrance families. These are the five big ones:

Floral

Rose, jasmine, gardenia, orange blossom. This is the broadest family: it can be bright and delicate or deeper when blended with sweet or woody notes. It works in almost any setting. Shop floral perfumes.

Citrus and fresh

Bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange. They feel clean and energising, are easy to wear every day and rule in hot weather. Their weak spot: they usually fade faster on the skin. Shop citrus perfumes.

Oriental and amber

Vanilla, amber, tonka bean, spices, resins. Warm, enveloping and long-lasting. They shine at night and in the colder months, and they are the natural choice if you want your perfume to be noticed. Shop oriental perfumes.

Woody

Cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli. They bring elegance and a dry, calm, very recognisable base. They pair well with almost every family and are usually a safe bet in men's and unisex perfumes. Shop woody perfumes.

Fruity and aromatic

Fruity scents play with red berries, pear or passion fruit and feel cheerful and modern. Aromatics, with lavender, geranium and herbs, make up the fougère family, clean and classic. Shop fruity perfumes | Shop fougère perfumes.

Step 3: learn to read the fragrance pyramid

A perfume does not smell the same in the first minute as it does three hours later. Its notes are arranged on three levels that unfold over time:

  • Top notes: the first thing you smell. They are light and volatile, often citrus or fruit, and last 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Heart notes: they appear as the top notes fade and define the character of the perfume. This is usually where flowers and spices sit.
  • Base notes: the densest ones: woods, vanilla, amber, musk. They are what stays on your skin for hours.

The most common mistake is buying on the top notes. What you will actually wear all day is the heart and, above all, the base. So when you read a perfume's notes, look at the base first: if you do not like it, that perfume is not for you, however much you love the first spray.

Step 4: choose the right concentration

The concentration of fragrance oil sets intensity and longevity. Choosing it to suit how you will wear it matters as much as getting the notes right.

Type Concentration Approximate longevity Best for
Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2–5 % 1–2 hours A quick fresh touch
Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5–15 % 3–5 hours Everyday, work, sport
Eau de Parfum (EDP) 15–20 % 6–8 hours Regular wear, morning to night
Parfum / Extrait 20–40 % 8 hours or more Special occasions, dry skin

A tip: if your skin is dry, perfume evaporates faster. In that case, an Eau de Parfum will last longer than an Eau de Toilette with the same notes.

Step 5: factor in your skin chemistry

It has probably happened to you: a perfume that smells wonderful on someone else turns sweeter or sharper on you, or vanishes within an hour. That is no coincidence. pH, hydration, diet and hormones change the way notes project and develop. That is why other people's recommendations are a starting point, never a verdict.

The golden rule: never buy a perfume without wearing it on your own skin for at least half an hour.

Step 6: test perfume like a professional

  1. Go scent-free. No fragrance and no scented body lotion. Any existing smell gets in the way.
  2. Limit how many you try. After four or five fragrances your nose gets saturated and stops picking up nuances. Several short sessions beat one long one.
  3. Use paper to rule out and skin to decide. A strip is fine for a first shortlist; the final call always happens on your wrist or the inside of your elbow.
  4. Do not rub. Rubbing your wrists warms the skin and speeds up the evaporation of the top notes. Apply and let it dry on its own.
  5. Give it time. Smell it again after 30 minutes and once more after two or three hours. If you still like it when only the base is left, you have found something.

Step 7: match your choice to the season and time of day

Temperature amplifies or mutes notes. What feels cosy in January can be overwhelming in August, and vice versa:

  • Spring: florals, greens and bright fruity scents. Shop spring perfumes.
  • Summer: citrus, aquatic and fresh scents, light and easy to wear in the heat.
  • Autumn: woods, soft spices and warm florals with a bit more body. Shop autumn perfumes.
  • Winter: orientals, vanillas and gourmands, which the cold makes softer. Shop winter perfumes.

The same goes for the time of day: in the morning and in enclosed spaces, perfumes with moderate projection work best; at night you can turn up the intensity. Shop daytime perfumes | Shop evening perfumes.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a perfume

How many perfumes can I test at once?

Four or five per session is sensible. Beyond that your nose gets saturated and stops picking up nuances. If you need to compare more, spread it over several days.

Why does a perfume smell different on each person?

Because skin chemistry changes how the notes develop. pH, hydration, diet and hormones all influence how a fragrance projects and how long it lasts.

Which is better, Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum?

It depends on how you wear it. Eau de Toilette is lighter and suits everyday wear and hot weather. Eau de Parfum is more concentrated, lasts longer and is the better choice if your skin is dry or you want your perfume to stay with you all day.

When is the best time to test a perfume?

In the morning, when your nose is rested and there are no strong smells around. Avoid doing it right after a meal or after putting on another fragrance.
