Few notes generate as much unanimity as vanilla. Warm, familiar, enveloping, it has the ability to make whoever wears it seem more approachable. But vanilla in perfumery is not a generic base ingredient: it is a universe of nuances that changes completely depending on what accompanies it.
Vanilla is not always sweet
Vanillin — the main aromatic compound — can express itself in very different ways depending on the co-ingredients. With amber and resins it becomes dark and deep. With sandalwood and cedar it gains dryness and elegance. With white flowers like jasmine it brightens and becomes creamy. With caramel, pralines or toasted almonds it enters the most classic gourmand territory. The same base note, four completely different fragrances.
The types of vanilla in the divain catalogue
Floral vanillas balance the sweetness with roses or peonies: the most versatile for everyday use. Oriental vanillas, with amber and spices, transform vanilla into something more complex and persistent, designed for afternoon and evening. Woody vanillas, with sandalwood or tonka, create a warm and enveloping skin fragrance. Classic gourmands bet directly on the most festive expression of vanilla: caramel and toasted nuts in the foreground.
Why vanillas last longer
Vanilla notes belong to the base: the molecularly heaviest ingredients, which bind more easily to fabric fibres and skin. The Eau de Parfum concentration amplifies this effect: most divain vanilla fragrances have an average duration of 8-12 hours on skin, with a sillage that is activated by body heat and improves in the colder months.
